THE ROOTS & CULTURE TOUR: (GHANA) Cape Coast Festival AUG 29th-SEP 8th 2020

The Roots & Culture Tour is for socially conscious travelers looking for a culturally satisfying 10 day experience that focuses on holistic wellness, gaining a deeper knowledge of local African culture and being of service to the local community. The retreat involve 2-3 days of volunteering in the communities to which we travel. The retreat provides jobs for over 20 local people, in addition to over 10 businesses ranging from transportation, cultural artists, hospitality and service workers from Accra, Cape Coast, all the way to Cape Three Points on the southern most tip of Ghana.

Participants can expect to have a true African Yoga experience infused with some of the richest aspects of Ghanaian culture ranging from Cultural Festivals, Traditional dance, African drumming, Batik art (a traditional African art form that dates back centuries), as well as having access to natural hair care, traditional clothing made by local tailors and so much more!

The retreat will begin in the capitol city, Accra. By day two participants will arrive in Cape Coast, where they will spend three days enjoying the Fetu-Afahye Festival, meeting chiefs, mingling with the locals and soaking up Cape Coast culture.  As with every other festival in Ghana, there is a great history behind the celebration of the Fetu-Afahye Festival. According to tradition, a plague once ravaged the Oguaa community – Cape Coast was founded as a fishing community by a man, Oguaa who gave his name to the place. Such was the devastating effect of the plague that the people called on their gods before the plague stopped and the land was cleansed. The word fetu is a contraction of ‘efin tu’ in the local dialect which means clearing the dirt. Oguaa Fetu Afahye festival is therefore a commemoration of that purification which saved the land from the plague and a show of gratitude to the 77 gods of the Oguaa Traditional Area.

Also, forever haunted by the ghosts of the past, the Cape Coast is one of the most culturally significant spots in Africa. This former European colonial capital, named Cabo Corso by the Portuguese, was once the largest slave-trading centre in West Africa. Coveted by its European colonizers for its abundance of gold by, Cape Coast is also known for being the last stop for Africans who were taken into slavery by European colonizers to the Americas. For this reason, this experience is much more than a Yoga Retreat. It is an opportunity to bring a spirit of healing and reconciliation to the place where Africans were forced to leave their homeland for a new and unknown world.  By day five participants will be headed to Cape Three Points, the southern most tip of the country.  The village of Cape Three Points is the southernmost community in Ghana, and its beach is one of the most beautiful along Ghana’s West Coast. Surrounded by Ghana’s only coastal rainforest reserve and many rolling hills, the village also has a few secondary attractions, such as relaxation, beach and sea activities, hiking, and exploration of its cultural present and past. I welcome you all to join me for this life changing experience in Cape Three Points & Cape Coast Ghana.

Most importantly, the Roots & Culture Retreat was created with the intention to make this transformational international travel experience affordable and accessible for individuals & families. For that reason, all children that are 12 years old and under (accompanied by a paying adult) will attend for free!!!
