The retreat will begin in the capitol city, Accra. Participants will spend the first day of the journey exploring Accra, the capitol city of Ghana. While in Accra, Participants will visit sites such as the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial, Arts Center, Mallata Market and enjoy some nightlife! By day two, participants will arrive in Cape Coast, where they will visit El Mina & Cape Coast Castles. Forever haunted by the ghosts of the past, Cape Coast is one of the most culturally significant spots in Africa. This former European colonial capital, named Cabo Corso by the Portuguese, was once the largest slave-trading center in West Africa. Coveted by its European colonizers for its abundance of gold by, Cape Coast is also known for being the last stop for Africans who were taken into slavery by European colonizers to the Americas. For this reason, this experience is much more than a Yoga Retreat. It is an opportunity to bring a spirit of healing and reconciliation to the place where Africans were forced to leave their homeland for a new and unknown world.
On day four participants will head to Kumasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The Ashanti Region is home to the Ashanti, the largest ethnic group of the Akan people, the largest and most influential tribe in Ghana. The region boasts Lake Bosumtwi. Lake Bosumtwi is the only natural lake in Ghana. It is situated within an ancient impact crater that is about 10.5 kilometres in diameter. The Ashanti consider Bosumtwi a sacred lake. According to traditional belief, the souls of the dead come here to bid farewell to the goddess Asase Ya. Also in Kumasi is the Kumasi Central Market (also known as Kejetia Market) an open-air market in the city of Kumasi. The Kejetia market is the largest single market in West Africa. Participants will also visit Manhyia Palace. The Manhyia (Akan language meaning Oman hyia - gathering of the town's people) Palace is the seat of the Asantehene of Asanteman, as well as his official residence. Finally, we will end our journey back in Accra. There we will be staying at The Healing Earth Temple! where we will enjoy learning how to prepare local dishes, bon fires, more drumming, dancing and traditional songs! I welcome you to join us for this life changing New Years experience in Ghana!
